Expansion Cards And Device Boards: What They Do
October 13, 2026

Expansion Cards And Device Boards Come From Computers, Phones, Drives And Vehicles. Learn What These Circuit Boards Do, How To Recognize Them, And Where They Commonly Turn Up.
A Network Card, A Phone Logic Board And An Automotive Control Module May End Up In The Same Electronics Recycling Lot, But They Started Out Doing Very Different Jobs. Some Move Data. Some Run A Complete Device. Others Control Motors, Power Or Vehicle Functions.
This Recycle Circuit Boards Guide Covers The Cards And Device Electronics Commonly Found In Repair Shops, Retired Computers, Office Equipment And E-Waste Collections. The Sections Below Explain The Hardware First, Then The Sorting Names Used When Those Boards Are Sold For Recycling.
In This Guide
Phone And Tablet Logic Boards
Cell Phone Logic Boards
A Mobile Phone Logic Board Connects The Parts That Make The Phone Work: Processing, Memory, Wireless Communication, Audio And Power Management. Its Small Size Explains Why Smartphone Circuit Boards Can Have So Many Closely Packed Components And Tiny Connectors.
Metal Shields Often Cover Sections Of The Electronics, So A Board Can Contain More Than You Can See From One Side. The Battery, Display And Cameras Are Separate Assemblies Connected To The Main Electronics. Texas Instruments’ Smartphone Design Overview Shows How Power, Battery Management And Audio Fit Into A Phone Design.
These Boards Come From Broken Phones, Repair Parts And Retired Mobile Devices. A Small Charging-Port Board From The Same Phone Is A Different Assembly From Its Main Logic Board.
Tablet Logic Boards
Tablet Mainboards Do Similar Work In A Larger Device, Connecting Processing And Storage With The Touchscreen, Audio, Wireless Hardware And Battery System. A Larger Screen Does Not Necessarily Mean A Larger Mainboard; Much Of A Tablet’s Interior Can Be Taken Up By Its Battery And Display Assembly.
Tablets Turn Up In School Equipment Replacements, Retail Checkout Systems And Business Device Upgrades. Wi-Fi-Only And Cellular Versions Can Have Different Electronics. TI’s Tablet Design Resources Cover The Display, Audio And Power Functions Behind These Portable Device PCBs.
Hard-Drive And Optical-Drive Electronics
Non-SATA Hard-Drive Boards
Older Hard-Drive Controller Boards Often Come From Parallel ATA Drives, Commonly Called IDE Or PATA. The Wide Pin Connector Is A Useful Clue. For Example, Maxtor’s DiamondMax Plus 45 Manual Describes A 40-Pin ATA Connector Mounted On The Drive’s Circuit Board.
Non-SATA Is A Broad Label, Though. It Can Also Describe Other Interfaces, Including SCSI And SAS. SAS Is Used In Enterprise Storage, So “Not SATA” Does Not Automatically Mean An Old Desktop Drive. Seagate Explains The Separate Interface In Its SAS Reference.
SATA Hard-Drive Boards
SATA HDD Boards Are The Electronics Attached To Hard Drives Found In Desktop PCs, Laptops, Recorders And Storage Systems. The Board Connects The Drive To The Computer And Carries Electronics That Help Operate The Drive. Seagate’s DiamondMax 10 SATA Manual Describes The Controller Embedded On The Drive PCB.
The Narrow SATA Connection Looks Different From An Older Desktop IDE Pin Header. On SATA Drives, The Data And Power Connector Sections Are Separate, As Shown In Seagate’s SATA And SAS Connector Comparison.
Keep The Terms HDD And SSD Separate When Describing A Lot. A SATA Solid-State Drive Also Contains A Circuit Board, But It Stores Files In Flash Memory Rather Than On Spinning Magnetic Platters.
CD-ROM And Optical-Drive Boards
CD-ROM, DVD And Blu-Ray Drives Contain Control Electronics For Reading Discs And Operating Their Mechanisms. Alongside Data Processing, The Electronics Manage Motors And The Optical Pickup. TI’s Optical-Drive Electronics Overview Describes Spindle Motor Control And Laser-Diode Supplies Used In These Systems.
Optical Drive PCBs Come From Computer Drive Bays, External Disc Drives And Disc Players. A Bare Controller Board Is Different From A Whole Drive With Its Tray, Motor And Steel Enclosure Still Attached.
Wi-Fi Modules And Computer Expansion Cards
Wi-Fi And M.2 Cards
Laptop Wi-Fi Cards Provide Wireless Networking And Often Bluetooth. Look For Small Antenna Connections And A Compact Edge Connector. These Modules Can Come From Laptops, Small PCs And Desktop Wireless Upgrades.
M.2 Describes A Family Of Module Formats; It Does Not Mean “Wi-Fi” Or “SSD” By Itself. Kingston’s M.2 Guide Explains That The Format Is Used For Wireless Devices As Well As Storage. M.2 SSDs Can Use SATA Or PCIe Connections.
Even Similar-Looking Wireless Modules Are Not Always Interchangeable. Intel’s CNVi Compatibility Explanation Describes Modules That Rely On Functions Built Into A Supported Intel Platform.
Gold-Finger Expansion Cards
The Fingers Are The Flat Contact Pads Along The Edge That Fits Into A Computer Slot. Expansion Cards Add Functions Such As Graphics, Sound, Networking Or Storage Connections. You May Find Them In Office Desktops, Gaming PCs, Workstations And Servers.
PCI And PCIe Are Different Interfaces. A Similar Purpose Does Not Make Two Cards Compatible With The Same Slot. For Identifying Scrap, Look At The Edge Connector, The Main Components And Any External Ports Together. The Photograph Below Shows An Older PCI Ethernet Card.
Expansion Cards With Brackets
The Metal Bracket Holds The Card At The Back Of A Computer Case And Positions Its External Ports. It Is Attached Hardware, Not A Separate Electronic Function. A Network Card With Its Bracket Still Attached Is Still A Network Card.
Full-Height And Low-Profile Brackets Fit Different Chassis Arrangements. Dell’s PowerEdge Expansion-Card Guidelines Distinguish Card Height And Length. In Recycling Lots, Brackets Add Material That Is Separate From The PCB And Its Components.
Cards With Fans Or Heatsinks
Graphics Cards And Some Other Add-In Cards Carry Cooling Hardware Over Their Main Chips. A Heatsink Transfers Heat Into A Larger Surface Area; A Fan Moves Air Through Or Around It. NVIDIA’s Tesla K20 Board Specification Shows Cooling For The GPU, Memory And Power Components.
Some Server Cards Use Passive Heatsinks And Depend On Airflow From The Server. NVIDIA Documents That Arrangement For The GRID K2. A Card Without Its Own Fan Is Therefore Not Necessarily Missing One.
Trimmed Expansion Cards
A Trimmed Card Has Had Its Edge Contacts Cut Away. That Describes Its Present Condition, Not Its Original Purpose. The Remaining Board Might Have Been A Graphics Card, Sound Card Or Network Adapter.
Once The Connector Edge Is Gone, The Board Cannot Plug Into Its Original Slot Normally. When Describing Previously Processed Scrap, Distinguish The Remaining Card From Any Separated Fingers. They Are Two Different Pieces Of Material.
Peripheral Boards And Component Density
A Peripheral Board Runs Or Connects A Device Outside The Computer’s Main Processing Board. Printers, Scanners, External Storage, Network Equipment And Other Electronic Devices Can Contain Several Boards With Different Jobs. Density Describes How Closely Components Are Packed; It Is Not A Test Of Whether A Board Works.
High-Density Peripheral Boards
These Assemblies Have Closely Packed Chips, Connectors And Small Components. Look For Areas Devoted To Processing, Memory Or Communication. A Printer’s Main Controller, For Example, Does Different Work From Its Power Board Or A Small Button Panel. Chip-Rich Peripheral PCBs Can Turn Up In Office Equipment Replacements And Electronic Repair Stock.
Lower-Density Peripheral Boards
These Boards Have More Open Space Or Fewer Components Across Their Surface. Some Carry Switches, Connectors Or A Small Number Of Control Parts. Their Layout Reflects The Job They Were Designed To Do. A Simple Interface Board Can Be Essential To A Device Even If It Looks Sparse Beside Its Main Controller.
Mid-Grade Circuit Boards
Mid-Grade Is A Scrap Sorting Term For Certain Mixed Electronic Boards. It Is Not A Manufacturer’s Performance Rating. When Describing General Circuit Board Scrap, Include The Original Equipment Type And Whether Large Components Or Attached Hardware Are Still Present. “Mixed Boards From Office Equipment” Gives More Useful Context Than A Grade Name Alone.
Low-Grade Circuit Boards
This Sorting Group Often Includes Power-Oriented Or Sparsely Populated Assemblies. Power Supply Boards May Have Large Capacitors, Coils, Transformers And Heatsinks Instead Of The Dense Digital Components Seen On A Phone Mainboard.
TV And Appliance Boards Should Not All Be Treated As Identical. One Television Can Have A Power Supply Board And A Separate Main Logic Board With A Very Different Layout. The Device Name Alone Does Not Describe Every PCB Inside It.
Automotive Control Boards And Housings
Automotive Boards Without Housings
An Exposed Automotive PCB Is The Circuit Assembly Removed From Its Enclosure. Depending On The Module, It May Handle Engine, Transmission, Lighting, Climate Or Other Vehicle Functions. The Board Can Include Processing, Power Control And Connections To Sensors Or Other Modules.
NXP’s Body Electronics Reference Explains The Range Of Jobs Assigned To Vehicle Electronic Control Units. ECU Means Electronic Control Unit In This Broad Context; It Does Not Always Mean Only The Engine Computer.
Automotive Boards In Housings
These Are Modules With Their Cases Still Attached. The Housing Supports And Protects The Electronics, And Some Designs Also Use It To Help Manage Heat. Large Multi-Pin Connectors Connect The Module To The Vehicle Wiring.
Modules Can Come From Auto Repair, Parts Replacement And Vehicle Dismantling. A Complete ECU Assembly Includes More Than The Circuit Board: Its Case, Fasteners And Connectors Also Contribute To Its Weight. Describe It As A Module In Its Housing When That Is What You Have.
Connector Ends And Gold Fingers
Gold Fingers Are The Plated Edge Contacts Found On Certain Cards And Memory Modules. Connector Ends Are Broader Assemblies That May Include Pins, A Plastic Body, Cable Remnants Or Metal Shells. Loose Contact Pins Are Another Form Of Connector Material.
The Gold Is A Surface Finish, Not A Sign That The Whole Contact Is Solid Gold. TE Connectivity’s AMPSEAL Contact Specification, For Example, Describes Copper-Alloy Contacts Available With Tin Or Gold Plating. The Finish Helps The Contact Meet Its Electrical And Environmental Requirements.
Separated Fingers, Loose Pins And Whole Connector Ends Should Be Described Individually. Their Construction Differs Even When They Have A Similar Gold-Colored Appearance.
Common Questions
Does Removing A Hard-Drive Board Erase The Files?
Is Every Small M.2 Board A Wireless Card?
No. M.2 Is Used For Several Types Of Modules, Including SSDs. Antenna Connectors Are A Useful Wireless Clue, But The Module’s Function And Interface Matter More Than Its Size Alone.
Is A Heavy Graphics Card Mostly Circuit Board?
Not Necessarily. Its Cooler, Fans, Bracket And Cover Can Make Up A Substantial Part Of The Assembly. That Is Why A Complete Graphics Card And A Bare Expansion PCB Are Different Descriptions.
Does “Low-Grade” Mean The Board Was Cheap Or Defective?
No. Here It Is A Recycling Category, Not A Diagnosis Or A Rating Of The Original Product. A Working Power Board And A Failed Power Board Can Have The Same Basic Construction.
What Should I Tell You About A Mixed Board Lot?
Tell Us What Equipment The Boards Came From, Approximately How Much You Have, And Whether They Are Loose Or Still Inside Devices. A Few Clear Photos And Your Pickup City Help Us Discuss The Material Without Guessing From A Category Name.

Sorting Cards And Device Boards For Recycling
A Mixed Device-Board Lot Can Include Tiny Phone Logic Boards, Heavy Graphics Cards, Drive Controllers And Power Electronics. Grouping Them By Their Original Job Helps Explain What Is In The Boxes. Note Fans, Heatsinks, Brackets And Housings Because Those Parts Add Weight Without Being The Same Material As The PCB.
Hard-Drive Controller Boards, SSDs, Phone Logic Boards, And Tablet Mainboards Have Different Layouts And Components. Describe Each Type Separately When Possible So The Quote Reflects The Actual Mix Of Electronics.
Separated Gold Fingers And Trimmed Expansion Cards Are Different Materials From Complete Cards. If A Lot Has Already Been Trimmed, Photograph And Describe Both Fractions Instead Of Combining Them Under One Card Name. Recycle Circuit Boards Can Discuss The Actual Mix With You, Including Whether It Is Loose Board Scrap Or Still Inside Devices.
